USMCA

Published in the September 2019 issue of North American Government News

The Administration has renewed efforts to get Congressional approval of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) this fall to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The agreement was signed in principle last November by the U.S., Canada and Mexico. All three countries need to ratify the treaty for it to take effect. Mexico has done so. The House leadership has requested numerous considerations before they will schedule a vote in Congress. Canada introduced legislation last May to ratify, but has said they expect to move ratification in tandem with the U.S. Canadian ratification could be complicated by the upcoming federal elections in October.
